ASPA HR sponsored this event to encourage bright and motivated young people to consider public and non-profit agencies for their future. This event was open to undergraduate and graduate students in Public Administration, Public Policy, Political Science, Economics, Finance, and all related fields of study.
The January ASPA Membership meeting was held on January 16th at Marker 20 in downtown Hampton. This was an evening open forum with Hampton Mayor George Wallace, who discussed regionalism from a Hampton perspective.
The Joint Holiday meeting for ASPA, COMPA, and NFBPA was held on December 11th from 6 to 9 PM.
In addition to dinner & networking, we had a City Managers’ Forum with James M. Bourey, City Manager of Newport News; Marcus D. Jones, City Manager of Norfolk; James K. Spore, City Manager of Virginia Beach; and Selena Cuffee-Glenn, City Manager of Suffolk. We truly appreciate the time the City Managers provided us, as well as their collective advice and encouragement.
ASPA HR held its November luncheon on Thursday, 11/21. Our speaker was Glenn Oder, the Executive Director of the Fort Monroe Authority (FMA), who provided an enlightening update on the status of Ft. Monroe.
The FMA is a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia, created to preserve, protect, and manage Fort Monroe and Old Point Comfort after the federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) closure in September 2011. The Authority is governed by a 12-member appointed Board of Trustees and is charged with promoting Fort Monroe and planning the responsible stewardship of the land and landmarks through a management structure unique in Virginia.
The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute is now accepting applications for its Minority Political Leadership Institute (MPLI). The application deadline for the 2014 MPLI Class is November 1, 2013. The Minority Political Leadership Institute (MPLI) is a collaborative initiative of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus Foundation and The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University. MPLI is an intensive seven-month experience designed to promote leadership development for all individuals interested in issues important to minority communities including: community economics, political climate, civic engagement, and racial equity. MPLI offers insights regarding leadership legacy and culture, personal leadership, policy and legislative processes, responsible stewardship, public service, and integrity for future leaders. Each program year participants have the opportunity to engage and interact with communities across the Virginia and learn about unique strengths and issues facing different regions of the Commonwealth. Todd Solomon, the interim Executive Director of the Hampton Roads Center for Civic Engagement (HRCCE) spoke to our chapter on “Citizen Involvement in Regionalism: How Civic Engagement Benefits Past and Future Regional Initiatives.” As a background for those who may not be familiar with the center, it is a non-profit that was created in 2008 based on a future of Hampton Roads study group.
The center was created to increase the ability of Hampton Roads citizens, governments and institutions to work together to strengthen the region economically and to enhance our quality of life. Todd discussed several of their recent projects to include the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) Urban Crescent Project, the Urban Land Institute Reality Check, and the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (HRPDC) Envision HR Project. They are now planning a regional project on “Sea Level Rise.” They will be asking citizens to identify their issues, discuss solutions and trade-offs, prioritize the results and create and action plan to move forward. He also discussed some of the work they are doing with the Kettering Foundation and the International City Management Association.
