November Luncheon

Catheryn Whitesell, the former director of the Virginia Beach Department of Budget and Management was the featured speaker at the Thursday, 11/17/2016 luncheon. Virginia Beach City Manager Dave Hansen recently appointed her to lead the new Strategy, Transparency, Innovation and Resiliency (STIR) office.

Under Ms Whitesell’s leadership, Virginia Beach has embraced data-driven government. Virginia Beach is using the Open Budget program to share revenue and expenditure data with citizens. Now, they’re launching an Open Performance program — one of the first in Virginia — to use data to improve accountability with citizens.

A New Way to Look at Government: Encouraging the Next Generation to Serve

The City of Norfolk provides meaningful and educational employment opportunities to Norfolk young adults age 16 through 19 through the Norfolk Emerging Leaders (NEL) program. NEL participants not only gain valuable work experience, but also take part in work readiness and financial planning workshops, network with city employees, and participate in workshops with community leaders. Over 200 positions in over 20 city departments help students explore areas based on their career interest. Trista Pope Fayton, Norfolk Emerging Leaders Program Coordinator lead an engaging discussion on this valuable program.

2016 Annual Symposium

The Challenge for Public Administration Associations: Millennial and Young Professional Engagement

To stay relevant, public administration associations need to understand, appreciate, and engage both young professionals and the millennial generation as they enter the workplace and discern their call to public service.

The purpose of the annual symposium, held on March 18, 2016, was to enter a dialogue on how we can meet this challenge.
